Mansakunko, Construction of low cost housing scheme for rural development institute (RDI)
INTRODUCTION: Rural Development Institute (RDI) is the only centre in The Gambia mandated to train professionals in integrated rural development established in 1979. The institute is a boarding one for trainees and to an extent part of members of staff are also housed at the institute.
The existing infrastructures including the dormitory, dinning and the halls are also available for hiring to outsiders for conferences and workshops. It is located in Lower River Region of the Gambia.
DOMITORY BLOCK FOR STUDENT-FRONT ELEVATION-RDI
DESCRIPTION: This project is intended to provide low cost housing facility to serve dual purpose of providing housing for both members of staff of the institute as well as accommodation for various uses at a reasonable cost.
It is expected to provide housing needs of up to at least twenty people including at least five members of staff at RDI. It is envisaged that Department of Community Development (DCD) through this partnership will provide labour, and to a great extent materials towards the construction of the required housing units.
PROJECT GOAL: is to provide housing needs at Rural Development Institute (RDI) for both trainers and outsiders.
DINNING HALL OF RDI
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJEC: This project will among other things provides low cost housing needs and contribute up to 20% of gross income of the institute for a period not less than ten years. It will further contribute to motivational aspect of the academic staff of the institute since housing is a basic need of people.
CLASS ROOM BLOCK FRONT ELEVATION-RDI
IMPLEMENTATION ARRANGEMENTS: This project will be implemented by the Rural Development Institute (RDI) as the beneficiary while the technical support and material support shall be provided by the parent body Department of Community Development through its appropriate technology unit. This unit will provide human and material support by a way of producing press-brick and roof tiles for the scheme which they have adequate experience in.
RDI will coordinate as well as serve as the sole body in implementing the project and shall be responsible for financial spending and reporting. The project is expected to be implemented with a period of six month from beginning to the end.
EXPECTED OUTPUT: This project is expected to construct and furnish ten low cost-housing unit with a total capacity of accommodating up to 20 people at a go within a period of six month at RDI.
RATIONALE: This project is designed and intended to improve housing needs of the trainers as well as provide income generation avenues of the institute by a way of serving as guest houses for our frequent visitors at the institute on routines basis.
Housing needs of the trainers is within a wider strategy of motivating staff while the other component of the scheme that is guest houses will avail the institute with an opportunity of increasing income for the institute which will go a long in sustaining the institute.

PROPOSED BUDGET OF THE PROJECT
The proposed budget including donor contribution is estimated at D800, 0000 out of which RDI and Community Development will contribute D150, 0000 and the balance of funds D650, 0000 is expected to come from a donor.
